Vijay Meunier grew up in Austin, Texas and started playing the guitar at
the age of 8. During his formative years he played in both guitar orchestras and rock bands and performed at many live music venues in the Austin area. At the age of 15, he received the Texas Young Master award from the Texas Commission on the Arts, which allowed him to travel to New York City, Quebec, Canada and Iserlohn, Germany to study with leading guitar pedagogues.
Vijay earned his B.M. in music performance from Florida State University, where he also fostered a love for ensemble playing and world music, especially the music of Latin America. He then returned to Austin to pursue the M.M. in music performance at the University of Texas at Austin. Some of his projects and collaborations include the Florida State Summer Opera Series, the Tallahassee Choro Society(an ensemble dedicated to performing traditional music of Brazil), Oliver Rajamani's Flamenco India project, and the AllRhythms Latin jazz ensemble.
As a teacher, Vijay enjoys working with students of all ages and backgrounds. His approach involves bridging the gap between classical, popular, and world traditions to give students the tools they need to express themselves in any musical style.
